March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Small Steps for Big Prevention

Did you know that in 2026, colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for Americans under 50? While that statistic is sobering, there is an incredible silver lining: when caught early, the survival rate for colorectal cancer is over 90%. This March, we want to shift the conversation from fear to empowerment. Many cases are entirely preventable because screenings can find and remove precancerous polyps before they ever have the chance to turn cancerous. It is one of the few cancers we can stop before it even starts.

Taking control of your health doesn’t always require a total lifestyle overhaul; it begins with the choices you make every day:

The most important step you can take is knowing when to get screened. While the colonoscopy remains the gold standard for its ability to both find and remove polyps in one step, there are now more convenient options than ever for average-risk adults:

The official recommendation for average-risk adults is now age 45, though you should speak with your provider sooner if you have a family history or notice persistent changes in your digestion. At Kern Valley Healthcare District, we believe in neighbors treating neighbors. Our team is right here in your backyard, ready to help you navigate these options so you can keep enjoying everything our community has to offer.
