Job Description

The primary role of the Mountain View Health Center (MVHC) Medical Assistant (MA) is to assist the clinic Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Nursing staff in providing care to patients at the MVHC. The MA will ensure proper information is present in the patient’s medical record prior to the patient’s visit, obtain vital signs and chief complaints for the visit, assist the provider during the examination and aid the patient and provider following the visit. Patient care information will be appropriately documented in the electronic health record (EHR). Referrals and prior authorizations are essential functions of the Medical Assistant. The Medical Assistant will relay messages from patients and respond to patients with the provider’s request. Adequate supplies will be maintained and ordered by the medical assistant.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Prepares and stocks examination rooms daily.
  • Rooms patients in an efficient manner to maintain patient /provider flow.
  • Records the reason for visit in EHR and verifies current medications and allergies.
  • Ensures necessary information is present in the EHR for the patients visit.
  • Aids the provider during exams and procedures as needed.
  • Processes referrals and prior authorizations on a timely basis.
  • Manage patient messages and communicate with provider as indicated.
  • Maintains communication with all members of the department.
  • Follows the 5 “Rights” of medication administration and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Performs waived testing per Clinical Laboratory’ and MVHC’s policy and procedure.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Consults other departments within the MVHC and hospital, as appropriate, to provide an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Communicates clearly and appropriately to team leader, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the MA scope of practice.
  • Use good judgment in ensuring adherence to established hospital procedures and policies.
  • Maintains awareness of staff adherence to safety procedures.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Always maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policy.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and other regulations.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and quality improvement (QI) activities.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Attend staff meetings, as appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
  • Perform duties in a safety-conscious manner to eliminate or reduce the likelihood of work-related illness or injury.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Current BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Possesses good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal relationships in a manner which enhances communication, promotes conflict resolution, and facilitates staff development.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Skills and knowledge to sustain and evaluate competence in the care of the age and type of patient populations served.
