Chicken Pox PSA

KVHD Team

A Public Service Announcement on Chickenpox.

CHICKENPOX PSA

Chickenpox, caused by the varicella zoster virus, is highly contagious and typically a childhood illness, but it can be severe for those with weakened immune systems, such as newborns, chemotherapy patients, and individuals with AIDS.

Pregnant women face risks like birth defects or stillbirths. The virus can also reactivate later as shingles, causing a painful rash and the potential to spread the virus to uninfected individuals.

RECOGNIZING THE SYMPTOMS

The illness typically begins with a mild fever and body aches similar to the flu, followed by an intensely itchy rash.

This rash starts as red bumps on the back or stomach before spreading to the limbs and becoming fluid-filled blisters.

It is essential to monitor these symptoms closely as they progress from blisters to crusty scabs over several days.

PROACTIVE PREVENTION

The most effective way to protect your family is to ensure that all children are fully immunized against the virus.

To limit the spread, avoid sharing food or personal items and isolate anyone who is sick until their rash is completely dry.

Practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and using clean tissues, is vital for community safety.

SAFER ER PROCEDURES

If you or your child have a suspected case of chickenpox, please do not enter the hospital building immediately upon arrival.

Instead, remain in your vehicle and call the ER staff at (760) 379-2681 Ext “0” to notify them of your situation.

This protocol is to prevent exposing any vulnerable patients and staff to the virus.
